Despurate House Cats: Cat Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
Thanks to the catio funded with the Petfinder Foundation’s grant, our foster cats are experiencing a level of comfort and enrichment we could only dream of before. The catio was installed at one of our foster homes that specializes in rehabilitating cats coming directly from the streets, many of whom have never known safety indoors. Having access to a secure outdoor space has been an incredible tool in helping them adjust to domestic life.
These cats can now safely enjoy the sights, sounds, and fresh air of the outdoors without the risks that come with free-roaming. For our more fearful or feral cats, the catio has made a huge difference in their desensitization process. It helps them transition more smoothly, giving them the familiarity of the outdoors while slowly introducing them to household routines and human presence. We’ve seen cats who used to cower in corners start to stretch out in the sunshine, play with toys, and even approach their foster for food.
Beyond the behavioral improvements, the catio has also reduced stress-related health issues and increased overall well-being. It allows for natural enrichment and movement, which helps these cats build confidence and maintain better physical health.
We’re so grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for this grant. The catio has transformed one of our foster homes into a healing environment where fearful cats can decompress and learn to trust again, bringing them one big step closer to being adoptable. Petfinder has been such an important resource in connecting our cats with loving homes, and this Petfinder Foundation grant has made that mission even stronger.

The Petfinder Foundation grant has had a profound impact on the cats in our care, especially those transitioning from life on the streets to life in a home. One of the best examples is Billie, a former street cat who came to us extremely fearful and withdrawn. He was one of those cats who wanted to trust but couldn’t quite take that leap. Indoors, he would hide for days, flinching at movement or sound, unsure how to navigate this new world.
Everything changed once Billie was introduced to the catio at his foster home. The outdoor space provided him with something familiar — the sights, sounds, and smells of the outside world — within the safety of a protected environment. It gave him the freedom to observe, relax, and explore on his own terms. Over time, he began to venture closer to his foster, play with toys, and even nap in the sun next to other cats.
That balance of security and stimulation made all the difference. The catio became a bridge between Billie’s old life and the one he was learning to trust. Today, Billie is adopted and thriving in a loving, indoor-only, multi-cat household. He’s confident, affectionate, and completely transformed, a true testament to how this space has helped fearful cats decompress and blossom into adoptable companions.
This grant has done more than build a structure. It’s built confidence, trust, and opportunity for the cats who need it most. We’re deeply grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for making this possible and for continuing to be such an invaluable resource in our mission to connect rescued cats with forever homes.
