Lailas Legacy Animal Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Redds was playing with a tennis ball and accidentally ingested the ball whole. He was taken into emergency care once we figured out where the tennis ball was and how it would continue to affect his health.

We are grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for its support in being able to care for our pets such as Redds in times of urgent need. He's been through so much and now we just need to find his forever home!

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Redds had a rough history, ending up at a shelter in a county with one of the last remaining breed bans (backed by bree-specific legislation) in the country.

He came in completely emaciated and unable to keep food or water down. For a dog his size, he should have been 70 lbs. and was barely 30 lbs. upon intake. Because of his rocky start, we sought medical attention to help him become a healthy and adoptable dog, including blood panels, prescription food, veterinary visits, and daily medication and supplements.

Now that he is a healthy weight, he is learning to enjoy life and play with toys. An incident recently occurred in which Redds was playing with a tennis ball and accidentally ingested the ball whole.

Because of his past, his system is delicate and we couldn’t take any risks, so we had to send him to be hospitalized for monitoring.

After a few-day stint in the hospital with extensive supportive care, Redds was thankfully able to pass the piece of ball that he ingested without invasive surgery. Aside from having a shaved arm from his IV catheter, you would’ve never known he had been so sick on presentation to the emergency care.

Redds is a healthy boy who is in foster care at this point. He is looking for a home to welcome him, especially as he has been one of the longer stays within our nonprofit. We hope to find him a loving home soon! You can meet Redds here.
