Humane Society of North Central Florida: Dog Field Trip/Short-Term Fostering Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation Dog Field Trips Grant, the Humane Society of North Central Florida was able to purchase 37 high-quality, escape-resistant harnesses.
The new harnesses have significantly improved the safety of dogs participating in field trips and other enrichment activities. After experiencing two incidents in which dogs slipped out of their harnesses, we recognized the need for more secure equipment to better protect the animals in our care. Grant funding allowed us to invest in harnesses that provide a safer and more reliable fit for a wide variety of dogs.
In addition to purchasing the harnesses, we implemented staff training to ensure they are fitted and used correctly. Together, the upgraded equipment and enhanced training have strengthened our safety protocols, increased confidence for staff and volunteers handling dogs, and helped us continue providing enriching experiences outside the shelter environment.
This grant has had a direct impact on the well-being and safety of all of our dogs by supporting a program that reduces kennel stress, increases positive human interaction, and helps dogs showcase their personalities to potential adopters.

Brutus spent well over a year in the care of the Humane Society of North Central Florida waiting for the right home. As a large dog with plenty of personality and a few special quirks, finding that perfect match took time. Brutus was not a fan of cats, bicycles, airplanes, and a variety of other things that made him a more challenging adoption candidate.
What Brutus did love, however, was people. He could never get enough attention and quickly became a favorite among staff and volunteers. Because of his size and strength, having secure, well-fitting harnesses was essential to safely including him in our Doggie Day Out program. The grant-funded harnesses allowed Brutus to continue enjoying outings into the community, giving him much-needed enrichment and opportunities to show off his affectionate personality outside the shelter environment.
Brutus became a regular feature on our social media stories as he enjoyed adventures with volunteers and staff. What we did not know was that someone had been paying close attention. Over the course of a year, one supporter faithfully followed Brutus’s adventures online, cheering him on from afar.
Finally, we received an adoption application for Brutus. The applicant shared that he had been following Brutus’s journey for months and had recently moved into an apartment with one goal in mind: If Brutus was still available, he wanted to adopt him.
Today, Brutus is thriving in his forever home with his new best friend. He enjoys beach trips, spending time with his family, and living the life every shelter dog deserves. His story is a reminder that even when an adoption takes longer than expected, every opportunity for enrichment, every outing, and every positive experience matters. Long-term adoptions like Brutus’s are especially meaningful because they demonstrate the life-changing impact that patience, dedication, and programs like Doggie Day Out can have for shelter dogs.
