Humane Society of Pinellas: Cat Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The grant funds were instrumental in enhancing the daily lives and overall well-being of the cats in our care. With this support, we were able to purchase and install durable, easy-to-clean cat shelves in our cat adoption room, providing much-needed vertical space for climbing, resting, and stress reduction.
This added enrichment has already had a noticeable impact: Cats are displaying more natural behaviors, showing improved socialization, and adapting more quickly to the shelter environment. By creating a more stimulating and comfortable space, these shelves support both physical and emotional health, ultimately helping our cats transition more smoothly into their forever homes.
We are incredibly grateful for this investment in our feline residents; it has made a meaningful difference in their quality of life and adoptability.

Spoon arrived at HSP on March 26 as a transfer from a partner shelter. At just 5 months old, she had missed some of her early socialization milestones and was understandably shy. While she could be won over with patience (and the occasional turkey hot dog), the shelter environment initially proved overwhelming for her.
After Spoon spent a brief stay in scratch quarantine following an escape attempt — likely a response to her high stress — our team explored a different approach to support her comfort and confidence. We placed her in one of our free-roaming cat rooms equipped with our newly added wall shelving and feline companions.
The change made all the difference. Instead of hiding under blankets or in beds, Spoon began perching proudly on the shelves — visible, relaxed, and fully engaged with her surroundings. The elevated space gave her a sense of security and a new level of confidence.
Thanks to this transformation, Spoon caught the eye of an adopter and officially found her forever home on May 22. Her journey is a perfect example of how simple additions such as cat shelves can make a profound impact on the wellbeing and adoptability of shy or sensitive cats.
