Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County, Inc. db/YOUR Humane Society SPCA: Cat Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

YOUR Humane Society SPCA is very thankful to the Petfinder Foundation for generously awarding our shelter a Cat Enrichment Grant. This grant support is helping us provide not only the cats and kittens who reside at our campus, but also at our off-site adoption partner sites and in our foster homes, the benefits of mental and physical stimulation with the purchase of play tunnels, catnip wands, climbing structures, laser pointers, and more as they await their adoptive families. These enrichment items improve socialization and increase positive interactions with fellow felines and with people, thus increasing their adoptability.

So many cats and kittens are benefiting from this grant, as these items can be continually used as new adoptable arrivals will test them out, get adopted, and the next rotation of felines will put them to the test again. Each passing group of cats and kittens that come into our Kitten Wonderland, Catty Shack, or off-site store partners will be happier and healthier when heading off into their new families where we encourage adopters to always apply enrichment to keep their quality of life at its best.

Enrichment items help to alleviate the monotony of quarantine, offering cats opportunities for exercise and play that contribute to their overall well-being and a quicker recovery where possible. Over time, these activities help cats build confidence, improve their appetites, receive a form of physical therapy with activity, experience reduced stress hormones, and recover from the emotional challenges of their isolation, ensuring that they are better prepared for adoption or reintroduction into a more active, social setting such as our Kitten Wonderland or Catty Shack housing spaces.

Visit Petfinder.com to learn more about our lovely cats and kittens and to see where they're located so you can soon meet them in purr-son!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

At our shelter, Sally (first photo), a shy and timid DSH/torbie, spent too many of her days hiding in a cubby or deep cat bed, showing little interest in interacting with people or other cats in our Catty Shack.

We believe she came from a loving home and, for unknown reasons, was surrendered to our county facility in mid-summer, but was quite stressed from all the drastic changes suddenly put upon her.

Recognizing her need for more stimulation and comfort, our dedicated shelter staff and volunteers introduced a variety of enrichment items we purchased thanks to the Petfinder Foundation’s Cat Enrichment Grant to help Sally build confidence and reduce any stress.

With each new toy — especially a feather wand she loved to pounce on — Sally began to feel more comfortable, slowly emerging from her hiding spot to interact beyond when food was served. Toys provided her with mental and physical stimulation, allowing her to release pent-up energy in a safe, controlled way.

Over time, she grew more accustomed to the presence of people and other cats, showing signs of curiosity and even seeking out gentle interactions. She participated at a recent off-site adoption event with calmness and curiosity, engaging well with our volunteers and prospective adopters.

Today, Sally is a much more social and confident cat, eagerly awaiting her forever home, where she’ll continue to blossom in an environment of love and patience.

You can meet Sally here.
