St. Francis Animal Rescue of Venice, Inc.: Cat Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Petfinder Foundation’s $500 Cat Enrichment Grant made a meaningful difference for the cats and kittens in our care. With these funds, we purchased a variety of scratch pads and boards for use throughout our adoption rooms. These enrichment items have helped reduce stress, encourage healthy scratching behavior, and provide both physical and mental stimulation for our cats.
Many of the cats who come to St. Francis Animal Rescue have experienced trauma, neglect, or sudden changes in environment. The scratch pads have given them an important outlet for natural behavior and helped them feel more comfortable and secure as they await adoption. We’ve also noticed that the cats are more relaxed and playful, which helps them show their true personalities to potential adopters and increases their chances of finding loving homes.
How many pets did this grant help?
Since the scratch pads are designed to be used for several cats, the grant should help provide enrichment for approximately 150-200 cats and kittens.
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Wendy, Spookums, and Anne (photos 1-3) are three kittens who came to St. Francis Animal Rescue after being found outdoors as frightened, undersocialized strays. When they first arrived, they were timid and unsure of people or their new surroundings. Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation Cat Enrichment Grant, we were able to provide them with new scratch pads, which quickly became some of their favorite items in the room.
These enrichment tools gave the kittens a healthy outlet for their natural scratching instincts and helped them feel more relaxed and confident in their environment. We’ve seen a remarkable improvement in their comfort levels — they now play together, explore more freely, and interact more easily with our volunteers.
Wendy, Spookums, and Anne are still waiting for their forever homes, but the progress they’ve made shows how important enrichment is in helping shy cats blossom into happy, adoptable companions.
