Southern Comfort Animal Rescue: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
We are incredibly grateful for the $4,500 in disaster emergency relief funding, which provided critical support to our shelter following the devastating hurricane that destroyed our storage silo. These funds allowed us to take immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals in our care.
When the hurricane tore through our community, it left destruction in its wake — damaging buildings, flooding roads, and knocking out power for weeks. At our shelter, the storm destroyed our storage silo, cutting off access to essential supplies, and left us in total darkness. With no electricity, no safe place for food and medicine, and uncertainty about when help would come, we faced one of the most challenging times in our history. But thanks to the $4,500 in disaster emergency relief funding, we were able to keep our doors open and continue caring for every dog who depended on us.
In the immediate aftermath of the storm, the shelter was without power, making it difficult to provide even the most basic necessities for the dogs. The relief funds allowed us to purchase fuel for generators, keeping the lights on and ensuring fresh water, proper ventilation, and safe temperatures for the animals. With the intense heat and humidity following the storm, these resources were critical in preventing dehydration and illness.
As recovery efforts stretched on for weeks, the funding also helped us secure a replacement storage unit after our silo was destroyed. This gave us a safe, dry place to store food, medical supplies, and bedding, ensuring that the dogs had everything they needed while we waited for supply deliveries and power restoration. Every day, as we worked tirelessly to feed, clean, and comfort the animals, we knew that this grant had made it possible to continue our lifesaving work.
Thanks to this emergency support, our shelter remained a place of security and hope even in the face of disaster. Every dog in our care had food, fresh water, and a safe environment to heal and wait for their forever homes. The road to recovery was long, but because of this funding, we never had to turn our backs on the animals who needed us the most.
With this grant, we were able to maintain a stable and safe environment for the animals, ensuring they had food, water, and medical attention despite the storm's destruction. Your support made an immediate and lasting impact during a time of crisis, and we deeply appreciate your generosity in helping us recover and continue our mission.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Thanks to the generous support from this grant, we were able to provide a second chance at life for Solomon (first photo) and Simon (second photo), two puppies from a litter of seven who were found abandoned, starving, and flea-infested. Their rescue journey was not easy, but because of this funding, we were able to ensure their safety, provide them with shelter, and ultimately help them find their forever homes.
During a devastating hurricane, a silo collapsed and took down their kennel. Thankfully, our dedicated staff acted quickly, retrieving and saving all the puppies. With no other immediate housing available, we had to temporarily place them in crates. However, thanks to this grant, we were able to purchase much-needed supplies and keep the lights on, ensuring these pups received the care and support they desperately needed.
In December, Simon and Solomon were transported to New Jersey, where they found their loving families.
Nicknamed Sully, Solomon spent time with foster parents Jeff and Janna, who helped him build confidence. At an adoption event, Amy instantly fell in love with Sully, recognizing he would fit right into her family, which already included SoCo alum Mikey. Foster mom Janna personally delivered him to his new home (third photo), and now he’s thriving, enjoying a spoiled, love-filled life (fourth photo).
Renamed Bronco, Simon is flourishing in his forever home (fifth photo). His family adores him, calling him the best dog they’ve ever had. He enjoys daily walks, zoomies, and cuddles, and his foster family’s dedication helped him transition smoothly. His mom says, “I just kept telling him how much I loved him, and now he smiles all the time.”
Because of this grant, Simon and Solomon, along with their littermates, were given a second chance at life. Your support allowed us to purchase essential supplies, keep the lights on, provide them with proper care, and ultimately help them find their loving forever families. The joy and love they now experience is a direct result of your generosity.
Thank you for making a difference in their lives!
