Hawaii Island Humane Society: Dog Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Petfinder Foundation's investment in our organization through the Dog Enrichment Grant allowed us to avoid any disruptions in our Canine Enrichment program, as we were able to replace worn/used Benebones and Kong toys and provide our shelter dogs with new toys.
All of our shelter dogs benefit from enrichment. Kong toys are part of our daily routine for in-kennel enrichment while Benebones are given as part of their bedtime routine, to promote relaxation.

Like so many of our island’s dogs, Jellybean was found as a stray. She was brought to our local animal control shelter. When no one claimed her, she was transferred into our care as part of our lifesaving partnership. As a testament to her sweetness, she earned herself the name “Jellybean.”
Although an animal shelter may be a scary and strange place for dogs who have known loving homes, we often find that many of our dogs adapt easily to life at our shelters. For dogs like Jellybean, who were found as strays with signs of neglect, our shelter, our staff, and our routines present a special kind of joy — and enjoyment!
Our Behavior and Enrichment program is designed to meet the social-emotional needs of all of our shelter dogs. In our care, Jellybean enjoyed her enrichment schedule and found comfort, relaxation, and entertainment in the many different types of enrichment that we offer. Her Kong toy was especially intriguing to her! After two months in our care, Jellybean found a loving forever home. She is a well-loved member of her new family. In her home, she knows warmth, comfort, safety, and love.
