Des Moines County Humane Society: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Kia Pet Adoption Grant came at a time we needed it the most! We have plenty of pets needing homes and it helped us get them in homes that may not have been able to afford the companionship of a pet. People on fixed or lower incomes need love too!

With this grant, we were able to get 28 pets into homes at low cost; we even had one person adopt three cats so they could stay together! We had a few bonded pairs that may not have been adopted due to costs, but were able to be adopted together and are so happy at home right now.

We have been overcrowded for over a year, and this gave us a chance to get some of our older residents into new homes. We are forever grateful for the Kia Pet Adoption Grant and what it has helped us with this year.

Tarzan and Jane (first photo) were a bonded pair who came in as strays together. They were here for a few months; then we had someone who had interest in them but had to wait a few months to get the money together. Instead, we were able to give her a deal she could not resist, and she came and adopted them the next day. They are so happy in their new home — they get to go to the dog park daily, too! To see these pups smile was worth the wait.

We had our long time resident Meowthra (second photo) get adopted with this grant also. She was here for 11 months before finding her new furever home; we did not give up, as we knew she was a good kitty, but she really only liked us. But we see now that she does like her new home and they update us often!

Cute kitties Danny Phantom and his mom Madeline (third photo) were a bonded pair. She was happy having him with her; without him, she was not as happy. So we had them listed as a bonded pair, and they got adopted by a sweet family that had not had cats before. They are now big cat-lovers and mom and son are so happy curling up each day together.

Without the Kia Pet Adoption Grant, neither of these bonded-pair adoptions may have happened, and we are forever thankful!
