Heart of Idaho Animal Sanctuary: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Heart of Idaho Animal Sanctuary has always liked Kong toys because they are very sturdy and difficult to destroy, so we don't have to worry about the dogs ingesting them and becoming ill.

At the present time, we have a number of large dogs who, for a variety of reasons, are difficult to adopt out in our area. The Kongs help keep them entertained and give them something to do in their kennels while they wait to be adopted.

The dogs are often protective of their Kongs and like to keep them with them for a sense of security. The rising cost of essential supplies in the past few years has made it difficult to maintain basic services for animals, so the free Kongs are a big help to us and our animals.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Kirby is a 3-year-old American bulldog mix. She has been with us for over a year. She is a wonderful, friendly dog whose only issue is that she can’t be around livestock, which makes her difficult to adopt in our area.

Through no fault of hers, she has had two failed adoptions. One adopter moved to a place that didn’t allow dogs and the second had to be hospitalized for a long period, so Kirby was returned to us.

She is our beloved office dog who greets all our visitors — often with her Kong in her mouth. She enjoys her Kong in her office role, particularly when it is filled with peanut butter. She takes it with her when she goes back to her kennel at night. She was quite pleased to get a new one.

You can meet Kirby here.
