South Suburban Humane Society: KONG Toys Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The generous donation of KONG toys had a tremendous impact on both our organization and the dogs in our care. KONG provided us with a large assortment of new enrichment toys valued at approximately $600, which allowed us to greatly expand our daily enrichment program for our adoptable dogs.
These toys have been especially beneficial in helping reduce kennel stress and anxiety during the dogs’ shelter stay. Many of our dogs spend extended periods in the shelter environment, and enrichment is critical for their mental stimulation, comfort, and overall well-being. The KONG toys provided healthy outlets for chewing, problem-solving, and food-based enrichment, helping dogs remain calmer, more engaged, and happier while awaiting adoption.
In addition to improving quality of life for the animals, this donation also helped our organization by reducing the financial burden of purchasing enrichment supplies, allowing us to direct more resources toward medical care and daily operations. We are incredibly grateful for KONG’s support and commitment to improving the lives of shelter pets.

One special dog this grant helped was Brazil (photos 1-4), a young dog who came into our care with a previous leg injury. Thankfully, Brazil was not in pain and did not require additional medical treatment, but dogs with physical “quirks” or old injuries are often overlooked by adopters and can spend longer periods waiting in the shelter for the right family.
During his stay with us, the KONG toys provided through this grant became an important source of enrichment and comfort for Brazil. He especially loved carrying, chewing, and playing with his new KONG toy, which helped keep him mentally stimulated and provided a positive outlet for his energy while in the kennel environment. Enrichment like this plays a huge role in reducing stress, preventing boredom, and helping dogs maintain a happier, healthier mindset during their shelter stay.
Because of KONG’s generosity, dogs like Brazil are able to enjoy more comfort, engagement, and joy while waiting for their perfect match. We are so grateful for the impact these toys have made for pets in our care. After these pictures were taken, the dogs in them — Brazil, Nova, and Maeve — found their furever homes. which makes looking at these pictures so much better.
