Tails Humane Society: Shelter Foster Support Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant has had a positive impact on our organization and the animals in our care. With the addition of safe, durable kennels and X-pens, we have been able to recruit new families to our maternity foster program in ways that were not previously possible. Prior to receiving this funding, our outdated and deteriorating equipment limited both the number of fosters we could have and the number of pregnant dogs and nursing mothers we could safely support.
With these new supplies, we are now able to confidently recruit and equip foster families to care for pregnant dogs and litters of puppies. The upgraded kennels and runs provide secure, sanitary spaces that meet the unique needs of maternity cases, ensuring that both mothers and their puppies are protected during a critical and vulnerable stage of life. This has directly increased our capacity to take in more at-risk animals — particularly pregnant dogs who might otherwise face unsafe conditions or euthanasia in overcrowded shelters.
Additionally, the improved setup allows for proper quarantine and separation, reducing the risk of disease transmission to both the foster animals and the resident pets in foster homes. This not only protects animal health but also gives our foster families peace of mind, making them more willing and able to continue participating in the program.
As a result of this grant, we have strengthened our foster network, improved the quality of care we provide, and increased positive outcomes for the animals we serve. More puppies are being born into safe environments, receiving proper early care and socialization, and ultimately being placed into loving, permanent homes.
We are so grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for this grant!

We are already seeing the direct impact of your support in our current foster placements. For example, Momma Jo and her six puppies are being kept safe and secure in their foster home thanks to one of the dog runs provided through this grant.
When Momma Jo first came into our care as a pregnant dog who had never experienced life in a home, our foster would not have had a safe or effective way to contain and care for her and her newborn puppies without this equipment.
Similarly, we are caring for a litter of five large-breed puppies from a local accidental litter. At approximately 20 lbs. each, these puppies require a sturdy and secure containment setup. Without the provided run, it would not have been feasible for a foster to safely manage their space, protect the home environment, or ensure the puppies’ safety and structure.
