Belleville Area Humane Society: Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant was gamechanging for the pets in our care. We were able to build a new walkway for the dogwalkers to access the walking paths without disrupting the lobby. During kitten season, we keep mobile cages with kittens in the lobby – so having dogs walk past all day was particularly distressing for them!

Additionally, this grant allowed us to place the new walkway in such a way that it created a buffer between the two play yards we have in the back of our shelter. Now we can use both play yards without the dogs distracting each other through the fence. We also used some of the funds to create more stable hooks to hold open guillotine doors on one side of the shelter. Now the pups have safe access to their outdoor space!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

One of the pups housed on the side of the kennels with the improved play yard and guillotine door stabilization is Jenny.

Jenny is our longest resident here at the shelter, although we genuinely do not know why. She is very dog-friendly and loves to go for walks. We’ve seen her grow from an adolescent puppy to an adult in our shelter and it’s heartbreaking.

Knowing that we can provide her the space to play in the yard and lie in the sun of her outdoor run is such a comfort to us. We know this makes Jenny’s stay here better too.

You can meet Jenny here.
