Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter: Cat Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The grant was allocated for improvements in both the free-range room and the kennels. We used the funds to purchase new cat trees equipped with multi-level resting spaces, complete with dangling strings and toys. Additionally, we acquired new cat toys that were distributed between the cat room and the kennel area. Sound machines were also procured for use in both spaces. Furthermore, we invested in toys featuring lights and other stimulating elements to ensure our cats receive enrichment and minimize the risk of kennel stress, which is a common issue among bored animals.
Given that the majority of animals we shelter are cats, it's crucial for us to find adopters quickly who can see the cats receiving stimulation while at the shelter. Without appropriate enrichment, cats may become withdrawn or exhibit feral behaviors, limiting potential adopters. This grant not only enriches the lives of our cats but also facilitates their adoption process.
Currently, our shelter relies on donated toys and cat trees, which are often used and raise concerns about disease transmission.

Sweet Nora Jean was overlooked for 43 days here at the shelter. We couldn’t understand why because she was so loving, cute, and playful.
Then one day an older lady came into the shelter looking for a cuddly cat to spend her days with. We spent a while showing her the cats we had available and telling her a little bit about each of their personalities.
After a while, it became apparent that Nora had chosen her person. Nora kept climbing up on her lap, purring, and rubbing up against her for more pets. The adopter was able to use toys to play with Nora Jean and instantly fell in love. The lady told us that Nora was exactly what she was looking for and she was ready to adopt her.
Now Nora spends her days with a large cat tree in front of large bay windows, basking in the sun! She has all the toys and affection in the world. All because this sweet lady took a chance on a shelter cat.
