How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The COVID-19 Operation Grant was used for vet costs incurred during the months of May, June, and July. Some funds were also used to buy dog and cat food for the shelter residents as well as members of the community who were experiencing financial difficulties due to COVID and who struggled to feed their pets.

The COVID 19 grant helped our organization in two ways. First, we were able to continue to intake cats and dogs and operate "as normal" regarding intake. We did not have to refuse surrenders or strays because of a lack of funds and donations to PCHS. Second, we were able to buy dog and cat food, not just for the shelter animals, but for our food bank which helps pet owners in need of food when they do not have the funds to buy food for their pets.

In June, the Larned Police Department responded to an emergency animal-hoarding situation. The police recovered eight dogs. These dogs were scared, dirty, unkempt, and only one was spayed/neutered. They all needed shots, deworming, altering, and microchips. Without this grant, PCHS would not have been able to care for them as needed. Seven of the dogs, a mama dog (Jolene — first photo) and her six puppies (Merle, Willie, Nelson, Patsy, Frankie, and Loretta), were adopted almost immediately. The other dog, a senior chow chow (Martini — last photo) who had to get groomed because she was so matted, was transferred to another no-kill shelter and was adopted within a few weeks.
