Wichita Animal Action League: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

When we took Tator into our care from a rural shelter, we had no idea that he had been born with a very painful condition: bilateral hip dysplasia. This is a condition that would worsen in time. Tator was barely a year old, and it just wasn't humane for a puppy to have to live his life on pain meds and not be able to play and wrestle with his foster brothers.

We were able to fundraise to cover the cost of one of his needed hip surgeries thanks to our veterinarian's generous discount, but it quickly became apparent that in order for Tator to have the best quality of life, his other hip needed to have the same orthopedic surgery.

Thanks to the generosity and kindness of the Petfinder Foundation and its Emergency Medical Grant, we were able to pay for this lifesaving surgery for Tator!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

We pulled Tator from a rural Texas shelter when he was at risk for euthanasia for space.

At only a year old, he wanted to wrestle and play nonstop with his foster-brother dogs, but it quickly became apparent that something was wrong with his hips. X-rays confirmed that he had congenital bilateral hip dysplasia, which is progressive in nature. His only shot for a good quality of life was to have orthopedic surgery on both hips.

Thanks to the kindness of our donors, our veterinarian who gave us a significant discount, and the generosity of the Petfinder Foundation, Tator was able to get this lifesaving surgery! He will have several months of rehabilitation before he will be ready for adoption, but his future is much more positive now, and we can’t wait to see him with his forever family!
