North East Humane Society: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Emergency Medical Grant allowed us to perform surgery on Tofino, a cat who was burned badly with a cigarette before she came into our care in November. We have a pound agreement with a vet in Nipawin, and they were the ones that sent her to us.

All of Tofino's wounds healed except for a massive, deep one on her shoulder. The vet informed us that it would close by itself, and to put Viaderm on it three times a day. This didn't work and the vets decided that it would need to be surgically removed.

We reached out to our vet, Mohawk Animal Clinic, and made a plan to remove the wound. Her surgery was performed on March 11, 2024, and everything went well. Dr. Earl Davis was the veterinarian responsible for the surgery and he removed the scar tissue underneath and the "crater" in her shoulder.

Tofino is on the way to be adopted and is healing well in her foster-to-adopt home. This grant allowed Tofino, the sweetest girl ever, to find her furever home and get the love that she deserves.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Tofino came into our care in November 2023. Before she came in, she was repeatedly burned with a cigarette on her feet, around her neck, and on her shoulder.

All of her wounds healed except for the massive, deep one on her shoulder. It was in a place that moved often and it struggled to heal properly.

Despite going through this abuse, Tofino remained the most loving and caring cat. She perked up as soon as someone walked in and started purring before you would even pet her. She did great with all of our other cats and was our perfect “test” cat to ease other cats into socialization.

Everyone who met her loved her; the only thing stopping them from adopting was her shoulder wound. This grant gave Tofino the opportunity to be adopted. She is currently pending adoption in her foster-to-adopt home. She will be adopted on March 14.
