Central Missouri Humane Society: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
CMHS (Central Missouri Humane Society) was thrilled to receive such a generous grant from the Petfinder Foundation. We always try our best to offer adoption specials towards the end of the year to try to clear out our shelter for the holidays. It's great to start the new year with as few animals in the shelter as possible.
The grant we received from the Petfinder Foundation allowed us to discount adoption fees for some of our longer-term residents. We were able to feature special pets on our social media and encourage adopters to come down to the shelter and check out the pets available for adoption. Not only did this grant help dozens of pets get adopted, it also opened up space at our shelter for the pets still in need in our community.
Grants like this help so much for a private animal shelter like ours that receives no annual funding from any national humane organization. Thanks so much, Petfinder Foundation!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Sugar (first photo) was one of the sweetest dogs who has ever come into the shelter.
She was dropped off at the shelter when her owner could no longer care for her. She hadn’t had much stability in her life and was completely shut down in the shelter. She would cower and growl at anyone who came close. Slowly, we learned to gain her trust and were finally able to get her out of the kennel.
Her entire personality completely changed when we brought her up to the front desk and gave her a big, comfy bed. She immediately relaxed and started jumping up for kisses.
She quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. She was the best companion for our DDO (Doggy Day Out) program and spent many afternoons adventuring in the community with our volunteers.
Through this grant, Sugar was adopted into a new home (second photo)!
