Polk County Humane Society: Shelter Foster Support Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Shelter Foster Support Grant helped Polk County Humane Society prepare for the large intake of kittens into our foster program during the spring kitten season. The funds were used to provide essential medical care and supplies that kittens need to be safe while cared for by foster families. The supplies included vaccinations, medications, probiotics and other health support items that individuals can't purchase on their own. This grant supplemented the many donations that PCHS received of items such as food and cat litter, which individuals can purchase on their own. We are grateful for the support that allowed us to expand our foster program to save more kittens in 2026.

How many pets did this grant help?

Over 100

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Cigarette had her kittens at a big-city animal pound. Not the best place for a litter to start out life. With the help of the Petfinder Foundation Shelter Foster Support Grant, Polk County Humane Society was able to transfer them into our care and place them with a foster when they were only three days old.

They struggled with the usual kitten illnesses, including an upper-respiratory illness, but they were able to be treated with the medications and vaccinations provided through the grant.

All five survived and have thrived. Four of the five kittens have been adopted. Cigarette is available for adoption now and her final kitten will be available for adoption within the next week.

You can meet Cigarette here.
