Chain of Hope: Cat Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant had a direct and meaningful impact on both our organization and the cats in our care. With the funding, we were able to purchase a variety of enrichment items, including scratchers, interactive toys, tunnels, laser pointers, a cat tree, and even a catio space.

These resources significantly improved the daily lives of our cats. Enrichment helps reduce stress, prevent boredom, and decrease behavior issues that can arise in a shelter or foster environment. We saw cats become more confident, more playful, and more engaged with both people and their surroundings.

In particular, items like tunnels and interactive toys encouraged natural behaviors such as hunting, exploring, and climbing, while the cat tree and catio provided safe spaces for exercise, relaxation, and environmental stimulation. This is especially important for cats who may be in our care for extended periods.

Beyond improving welfare, this enrichment also made our cats more adoptable. Cats who are relaxed, curious, and interactive tend to connect more easily with potential adopters, ultimately helping us place them into homes more quickly.

Overall, this grant allowed us to create a more humane, stimulating, and enriching environment, directly supporting both the physical and emotional well-being of the cats we serve.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

One of the cats who benefited from this grant is Howie (photos 1-3), an 8-year-old cat who was recently owner-surrendered after spending his entire life with the same person. The transition was incredibly difficult for him, and when he first came into our care, he was very shut down, spending most of his time hiding and avoiding interaction.

Because of this grant, we were able to provide enrichment items that gave Howie the ability to adjust at his own pace. One of the most impactful items was a hut-style bed, which allowed him to safely hide while still observing the activity around him. This gave him a sense of security without complete isolation.

What truly helped Howie begin to come out of his shell was an interactive spinning toy with a feather attachment. At first, he watched from a distance as the other cats played. Over time, his curiosity grew, and he slowly ventured out to engage with the toy himself. This was a major turning point in his confidence.

He then began participating in play with a laser pointer, which further encouraged movement, play, and positive interactions around the other cats. These enrichment tools helped him rebuild confidence, reduce stress, and begin to feel comfortable in a new and unfamiliar environment.

While Howie has not yet been adopted — likely due to his being a senior during kitten season — we are confident his time is coming. Thanks to these enrichment items, he is no longer shut down and is now showing his personality and readiness for a forever home.

This grant directly helped transform Howie from a withdrawn, uncertain cat into one who is engaged, curious, and emotionally ready for adoption.
