A Dog's Dream, Inc.: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The generous KONG toy grant from the Petfinder Foundation provided meaningful enrichment, comfort, and behavioral support for the retired breeding dogs in A Dog’s Dream’s adoption program.

Many of the dogs entering our care have had limited exposure to toys, play, mental stimulation, or positive enrichment opportunities. The KONG toys helped reduce stress and anxiety during transition periods, encouraged healthy play behaviors, provided mental engagement, and supported emotional rehabilitation as dogs adjusted to life outside of breeding environments.

These enrichment tools also helped foster families and volunteers build trust and experience positive interactions with dogs who were often fearful, timid, or unfamiliar with normal household experiences.

The grant significantly improved the quality of life for dogs in our care while helping our organization provide more-comprehensive rehabilitation and enrichment support without increasing operational costs.

How many pets did this grant help?

50-100

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

One especially meaningful story involves a retired breeding dog named Birdie (photos 1 and 2), who entered our program extremely timid and unsure about human interaction.

Birdie was hesitant in new environments, fearful of sudden movements, and struggled with confidence during her first several weeks in our program. One of the KONG toys quickly became an important source of comfort and enrichment for her. Through treat-based play and positive reinforcement, Daisy slowly began engaging with our staff, showing curiosity, and developing confidence in her surroundings.

We noticed that the KONG toy became one of the first things that encouraged her to relax, play independently, and experience joy. Over time, Birdie’s emotional progress helped prepare her for successful adoption into a loving forever home, where she continues to thrive.

Stories like Birdie’s demonstrate how impactful enrichment and emotional support can be for dogs transitioning from breeding environments into family life.
