Wagon Tails Farm Rescue: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Food, toys, litter, and supplies for foster animals

This grant allowed us to order food, litter, treats, and toys for our fosters as they were without work and therefore paychecks. Our fosters also were able to take on more fosters since we were able to cover these costs for them.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Meet Mikey. This adorable cattle dog/corgi mix was found wandering with a companion girl, and sadly he and his friend were found to be heartworm-positive. He came into foster care with us and immediately started his pretreatment care, which was then followed by injections and rest as his body did the hard work of fighting off the heartworms. He came into foster care at the beginning of COVID and has been a part of his foster home’s furry family ever since.

His foster is a college professor who not only had to learn how to change her teaching methods to adjust to virtual classrooms, but she also took on multiple fosters, including this guy, who needs all the extra love and care as he goes through this difficult treatment. Keeping an Australian cattle dog quiet and under crate rest after heartworm injections is NEVER an easy thing. Receiving a grant like yours allowed us to be able to not only purchase food for her fosters, but also to get chews, toys, bones, etc., to keep Mikey occupied while keeping his excitement under wraps and his heart rate low to help keep him safe during his recovery.

This sweet boy is now coming to his fourth week post-injections, and he can now be tested for any physical heartworm evidence. Then he will have a final six-month-post-treatment test. This boy has come such a long way, from a scared 38-lb. boy to a lean and confident 30-lb. stud. We cannot wait to see how he continues to come out of his shell and grow into his skin as he looks to find his furever family.

He is still available on Petfinder; you can check out his profile here.
