Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc.: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The funds were used for Eleanor's emergency medical care.

The grant helped Eleanor through lifesaving medical care to fight the panleukopenia virus. Without these funds, we would not be able to afford the intensive hospitalization needed to save her life.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Eleanor was a tiny kitten whom RBARI rescued from a local, inner-city high[-intake] shelter. Upon rescue, her eyes were sealed shut from so much discharge due to a severe upper-respiratory infection. She was filthy and covered with fleas when rescued. She was anemic from having so many fleas. RBARI staff bathed her and spent hours pulling fleas off of her with tweezers. They began her on medication for her upper-respiratory infection, and she seemed to be improving. Sadly, the foster contacted us very concerned because Eleanor was weak, lethargic and not eating. She was rushed to our participating emergency hospital, where she was diagnosed with panleukopenia. With thanks to a Petfinder Foundation grant, Eleanor was hospitalized with 24-hour intensive care, IV antibiotics and fluids. She overcame this deadly virus and was released from the hospital and placed in quarantine in a foster home. She just this week came back to the shelter and is up for adoption. Eleanor is ready to find her forever home! Meet Eleanor here.
