Animal Welfare Association: Other Animals Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
AWA is pleased to report that all objectives outlined in our request for funding have been successfully met. With the generous support provided by the Petfinder Foundation, we were able to:
- Purchase essential animal-husbandry equipment including water bottles, hidey houses, food bowls, and enrichment items to outfit the expanded small-mammal housing units, setting us up for continued expanded lifesaving capacity in the future.
- Offset the cost of 10 rabbit spay/neuter surgeries, helping to launch our increased-capacity initiative and begin making a meaningful impact for more small animals in need in our community.
This support allowed us to not only enhance the care and quality of life for small mammals in our shelter but also increase our ability to intake and adopt out more animals. In particular, this allowed us to partner more closely with another local shelter that has no space to house small mammals, giving many more rabbits and guinea pigs a second chance at a happy life. We are grateful for the opportunity to expand this vital program and look forward to continuing this important work.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
10 rabbits received spay/neuter surgery thanks to this grant, including Bellatrix and Steve.
Bellatrix was transferred to AWA from a regional high-[intake] shelter that has no space for small mammals. Thanks to the funds received from the Petfinder Foundation, we had the space and ability to save her life. She was spayed and is now living her best life with her new adopted family (first photo).
Steve (second photo) came to AWA from an overcrowded local shelter where he was being kept in a small crate in the lobby surrounded by dogs. Steve has neutered and is now thriving at AWA. We are confident he will be adopted very soon! Meet Steve here.
