NYC Second Chance Rescue: Dog Field Trip/Short-Term Fostering Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We are truly grateful for this fantastic opportunity enabling us to acquire vital supplies for our program's success. With the purchase of harnesses, "adopt me" leash sleeves, and engaging toys, we can ensure that the dogs in our care are well taken care of and entertained during their time away from our shelter.

This dog field trip/short-term fostering program is essential to boosting the declining adoption statistics. Such programs, like our Weekender program, can provide valuable insight for potential adopters and organizations. We learn much more about dogs and how they act when having fun and experiencing a home instead of being confined in a small kennel.

Thanks to this grant, we can provide more dogs with sleepover essentials, hopefully leading to more adoptions.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Shadey has been a resident of our Rescue Center for a long time.
Our hearts were shattered every time he returned because we knew he was a sweet dog; he was just misunderstood. Loners, dogs who prefer to be the only pets, spend significantly longer in shelters. However, they have just as much love, companionship, and loyalty to share.

Shadey is boyfriend material: He enjoys long walks on the beach and quiet evenings on the couch. He is a mature, loyal, and fun-loving guy who will make a perfect companion.

For quite a while, no applications came in until someone took a chance on him and brought him home with her as a “Weekender.” Shadey was on his best behavior and formed a special bond with his temporary foster. Their connection was so strong that Shadey’s foster mom chose to take him on another sleepover the following week. After that, Shadey never returned to our Rescue Shelter because he had officially graduated from being a weekend visitor to a full-time foster pup!

He is still adjusting to life outside the shelter, learning to find peace in the quiet and enjoying his newfound freedom. During the day, Shadey naps on the couch and loves to spy on the neighbors while his owner is at work. He acts as if he has lived in that home for his entire life. Even though he hasn’t been adopted yet, his wait has become much more comfortable.

Thanks to the generous grant from the Petfinder Foundation, we could purchase the necessary supplies for sleepovers. This allowed our organization to continue with the program that might have saved Shadey from total despair.

Meet Shadey here.
