Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County: Cat Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Cat Enrichment Grant from the Petfinder Foundation allowed us to enrich the lives of cats housed at the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County by providing stimulating environments that mimic natural behaviors. By incorporating enrichment activities and items (Kuranda towers, scratching pads) into their daily routines, we are able to reduce stress, prevent boredom, and improve overall welfare. Additionally, these items increase the adoptability of our feline residents by showcasing their playful and friendly personalities.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Tallulah was surrendered to our shelter by her owner, who “had too many animals.” She was scared, skittish, and distrusting of people. She hissed whenever anyone came near and wanted to hide.

The Kuranda towers we were able to purchase with the Petfinder Foundation Cat Enrichment Grant have given Tallulah the safe space she needed, and the dedication of our staff and volunteers, along with her newfound sense of safety and security, have allowed her to begin to come out of her shell and begin to trust people.

She has made great strides and will let our staff pet and play with her. The Kuranda towers allow her to retreat when needed and perch and watch activities from where she feels safe and secure. She has not yet been adopted, but with time and care, we feel confident that she will find her forever home.

Meet Tallulah here.
