Crazy Cats Animal Rescue: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
As described in our application, Crazy Cats used support from the Petfinder Foundation to purchase necessary supplies for our foster cats, including food, litter, and supplies during COVID-19 when routine veterinary care was suspended in Ohio. Not only did we spend the funds on necessary supplies, but Crazy Cats was able to purchase the supplies at a large discount from the local pet food warehouse, stretching Petfinder Foundation dollars even further to help more cats.
Springtime is kitten season and is a time when Crazy Cats is usually very busy, taking in mothers and kittens from the streets of Cincinnati, prepping them for adoption, and sending them off to their new homes. However, this spring, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, veterinary services were suspended in Ohio. While many other rescues stopped taking in cats, Crazy Cats continued to take in cats from the streets and from high-risk public shelters, and to hold them until veterinarians were allowed to resume their work. Crazy Cats was able to save lives and prevent unwanted kittens because our Petfinder Foundation grant gave us needed funding for cat food, litter, and supplies to care for our cats during the shutdown.

Crazy Cats works closely with high-risk shelters in Kentucky. When we got a call to help alleviate overcrowding at one of these shelters, we took in a mother cat and her three 2-week-old kittens. The mama was named Krispie and the adorable tabby kittens were Snap, Crackle, and Pop. When the kittens were old enough and the mother had finished nursing her babies, all four were cared for with Petfinder Foundation support until they could be spayed/neutered.
The Haun family lost their beloved 17-year-old cat in November 2019 and last month they felt they were ready to add cats back into the home. They were looking for two kittens to match their two children. They met Snap, Crackle, and Pop and fell in love. However, they couldn’t imagine choosing two kittens and leaving one behind, so they adopted all three kittens.
The photo shows the Haun family and their new kittens on adoption day. There is also good news about Krispie, the mother cat: A volunteer from the high-risk shelter had fallen in love with her before she came to Crazy Cats and officially adopted her!
