League for Animal Welfare: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant helped Mousey, a sick kitten who came to us after her mom, a farm cat whom we later spayed, refused to nurse her. She had far more going on than we realized – she was diagnosed with a liver shunt six months after entering our care and received a lifesaving surgery to repair it. Mousey was adopted by her foster family.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Mousey entered our care as a traditionally sick kitten: eyes glued shut, a respiratory infection. We figured she would get two weeks of treatment and then be on her way to her forever home.

But what first appeared to be a never-ending respiratory infection gave way to an inability to put on weight, and then finally to seizures. She was diagnosed with a liver shunt – a rare condition that came with an estimate of $7,500 to surgically repair it.

Mousey got her surgery thanks in part to the Petfinder Foundation’s investment. By the time she’d made it through everything, Mousey’s foster family had grown too attached to let her go and adopted her.

The Petfinder Foundation made it possible for her to get lifesaving care and have the opportunity to grow up in a loving family.
