Nexus Animals: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The $500 Petfinder Foundation grant provided crucial financial support that enabled Nexus Pets to deliver emergency medical care for Lady, a senior dog with severe neck injuries from an embedded collar. This timely funding covered her urgent surgery and ongoing treatment, allowing us to respond immediately without financial hesitation. By supplementing our existing Rita's Angel Fund, the grant empowered us to say "yes" to helping a vulnerable animal in critical condition, demonstrating how targeted financial assistance directly translates to saved lives and second chances for pets in desperate situations.

Lady’s story is one of remarkable resilience and hope. This sweet senior dog was discovered wandering alone in freezing temperatures in Oklahoma City with a severely embedded collar causing painful wounds around her neck. A compassionate community member couldn’t leave her suffering and contacted Nexus Pets for help.

We immediately took Lady into our care regardless of how expensive it was sure to be. Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation grant, Lady received life-saving surgery and comprehensive care at our partner facility, Acre View Pet Hospital, under Dr. Barger’s expert supervision.

Despite her traumatic ordeal, Lady’s gentle spirit never wavered—she wagged her tail during recovery, enjoyed her cozy bedding and chew bones, and even cooperated with wound treatments (with some Cheese Whiz on pretzels as encouragement).

We are delighted to report that Lady has been adopted! A wonderful family fell in love with her sweet personality and resilience, providing her the loving forever home she always deserved. Her transformation from a critically injured stray to a beloved family member exemplifies the profound impact of the Petfinder Foundation’s support.
