Senior Dog Rescue of Oregon: Senior Pet Adoption Assistance Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We accepted BJ, a 10-year-old red heeler mix, into our program in October 2024. He was a great dog but needed a specific type of home, with parents who were willing to manage his Lyme disease and deal with his excessive energy. Also he needed to be the only dog in the home.

The Petfinder Foundation's grant provided a needed boost, allowing us to offer a no-fee adoption and cover selected post-adoption expenses. We still went through the same rigorous screening process for his adopters.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Ten-year-old BJ, a red heeler mix, came to Senior Dog Rescue of Oregon after his owner since puppyhood moved to a memory-care facility. During SDRO’s veterinary check and blood tests, it was discovered that BJ had Lyme disease — fortunately, the chronic rather than the active form.

BJ had so much energy and needed a lot of attention. Plus, he was very protective of his keeper, which caused aggression towards other dogs in his space. After nine months, BJ was adopted by a wonderful family with five fenced, wooded acres where he can run to his heart’s content. The Petfinder Foundation Senior Pet Adoption Assistance Grant was very helpful in giving BJ the boost he needed and deserved!
