Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue: Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant has helped BLRR purchase various enrichment items for our dogs in foster care. We send a "welcome kit" to our foster families when they bring a foster into their home. This kit may include balls, tug toys, chew sticks, snuffle mats, and other items that benefit the dogs as they wait for adoption. Many of our rescues come from "puppy farms" and may not have had any previous experience with toys or enrichment items, so this is invaluable to their preparation for becoming a family dog.

How many pets did this grant help?

BLRR takes in, on average, 13 dogs a month, so roughly 156 dogs per year. Each welcome box includes a combination of both handmade and purchased items, with an approximate value of $50 per box. The grant will help us assemble about 20 boxes.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Baylor (first photo), an 8-year-old chocolate Lab, spent her first eight years as an only dog with her aging owner. When her owner moved into memory care, she came to BLRR. Baylor loves playing with tennis balls, Nylabones, and squeaky toys.

Dancer (second photo) is a black Lab mix puppy. Rescued from rural Arkansas after losing his stray mama, Dancer and his siblings were given a second chance at Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue.
