Lycoming County SPCA: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Enrichment toys can enhance an animal's ability to learn, helping them develop new skills. They also promote their natural behavior, such as foraging, exploring, and playing. This grant provided an opportunity for our dogs to relax and improve their thinking skills, ultimately improving their mental wellness. Kongs are a core part of our animal-rehabilitation process and they help our dogs feel loved and enriched through the interaction.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

While many dogs benefitted from this grant, we chose to highlight Ralph (first photo).

Ralph is a 2-year-old male hound mix with a minor bite history due to his playfulness. He is a very fun boy with a whole lot of energy. He showed interest in all of the toys but wasn’t sure what to do with them. He knows how to sit, but will need some work on his manners, as he is a jumper.

Having interactions with Kongs on a regular basis helps to curb his chewing tendencies and enables him to be calmer for his handlers if a Kong is given before a walk.

You can meet Ralph here.
