Three Little Pitties Rescue: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The KONG Toy Grant from the Petfinder Foundation directly improved the daily well-being of dogs in our care by providing durable enrichment tools that support both physical and emotional health. The toys were used across foster homes, boarding environments, and kennel settings to help reduce stress, alleviate boredom, and encourage positive, species-appropriate behaviors.

Many of the dogs we rescue arrive after experiencing neglect, instability, or extended shelter stays. KONG toys allow caregivers to provide structured enrichment through safe chewing, mental stimulation, and food-based engagement. This is especially beneficial for dogs with anxiety, high energy, or behavioral needs, as the toys help redirect destructive behaviors and provide calming outlets during crate time, decompression periods, and transitions.

In addition, the toys support training and behavior programs by reinforcing positive behaviors, improving focus, and increasing dogs’ ability to self-soothe. Overall, the grant helps create a more enriching, supportive environment that improves quality of life for dogs while they wait for adoption and contributes to smoother transitions into foster and adoptive homes.

At just 5 months old and only 15 lbs., Chester Cheeto was found stray in Texas City and placed on the euthanasia list. Before his life had truly even begun, his future was already in danger.

Thanks to rescue, Chester was given the second chance every puppy deserves. With immediate medical invention and a dedicated foster, he recovered from skin infections and wounds. Today, he’s safe, loved, and thriving in Washington — proof that a little hope can change everything.
