Friends of Marshall Animals: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The 2026 Emergency Medical Grant had a tremendous impact on both Friends of Marshall Animals and Marlow, a dog who came into our care with significant medical and behavioral challenges.

Marlow arrived with sarcoptic mange, an extreme fear of people, and a large mass on his hind leg that required surgical treatment. Grant funding made it possible to provide his initial veterinary evaluation on Feb. 3, 2026, including an examination, X-rays, cytology, and medications.

Because of the size and location of the mass, our veterinarian chose to shrink it before attempting removal. On March 12, 2026, Marlow underwent surgery at Taylor Veterinary Clinic, where the grant covered his pre-operative bloodwork, anesthesia, mass removal, histopathology, and post-surgical medications.

This grant gave our organization the resources to provide advanced medical care that might otherwise have been beyond our reach. Most importantly, it helped transform Marlow from a frightened, unhealthy dog into one ready for a new home and a brighter future. We are sincerely grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for making that transformation possible.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

When Marlow first came to us, he was struggling. On his own for years and suffering from sarcoptic mange, he was deeply fearful of humans — it had taken months of trapping attempts to finally get him the care he needed.

Once safe, he was brought to Marshall Pet Adoption Center, where his companion dog, Shimmer, awaited him. But Marlow’s road to recovery was far from over. A mass discovered on his hind leg added yet another hurdle, but Marlow was not giving up — and neither were we.

With the support of the Petfinder Foundation’s 2026 Emergency Medical Grant, Marlow received the care he needed, from his initial evaluation to the successful surgical removal of the mass in March 2026. With each passing week, his health improved, and slowly, his trust in people began to grow.

We are overjoyed to share that Marlow has been accepted at a sanctuary, where he will spend the rest of his life in peace and comfort. And best of all, he won’t be alone — Marlow and Shimmer will share their days together, side by side.
