City of Lufkin Animal Services: Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Dog Enrichment Grant made a meaningful impact on the well-being of our dogs by funding the construction of three 40×40 play yards. These spacious areas give dogs the opportunity to leave their kennels more often and engage in natural behaviors like running, playing, and exploring.

With dedicated play spaces, staff can better rotate dogs through enrichment time, reducing stress, anxiety, and kennel-related behaviors. The yards also allow for safer, more structured socialization and one-on-one interaction with staff and volunteers.

Overall, the grant has improved both the physical health and emotional well-being of the dogs, creating a more positive and enriching shelter environment.

Juggernaut (first photo) is already making the most of the new play yards. He is relaxed, playful, and fully engaged with his surroundings.

For a dog like him, the new 40×40 play yards are a huge benefit. They give him room to run freely, stretch his legs, and burn off energy in a way that just isn’t possible in a kennel.

Having access to these larger areas means Juggernaut can spend more time outside, which helps reduce stress and keeps his mind stimulated. You can see his happy, playful expression, and that kind of engagement is exactly what these yards are meant to encourage.

Play-yard time also gives him the chance for more positive interactions with people, whether it’s playtime, training, or just soaking up attention. The play yards help dogs like Juggernaut stay healthier, happier, and more adoptable by allowing their true personalities to shine.

Meet Juggernaut here.
