Houston SPCA: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant was essential in ensuring we could continue to provide quality care to the animals during and after the storm. By fueling and maintaining our generators, we were able to restore power and stay fully operational, which was vital for our medical team to continue life-saving treatments. Animals in our care received individual medical attention, including treatment of injuries sustained during the storm, emergency surgeries, and ongoing care for pre-existing conditions.
This grant enabled the repairs to our outdoor shelters, including the goat shed, which provided displaced or rescued animals a secure place to recover. Cleanup efforts supported by these funds ensured our staff and volunteers could navigate the grounds safely to transport animals, deliver food and water, and maintain the property.
With the support of this grant, we were able to provide displaced, injured, and frightened animals with protection and care in the aftermath of the storm.
How many pets did this grant help?
The amount of pets who have been impacted to date, May 16 to Nov. 27, is 11,746. This reflects animals who have come into our care and benefitted from the facilities repairs.

During the tornadoes on May 16, a tiny three-and-a-half-week-old kitten (first photo) found himself in a dangerous situation. Injured and exposed to the harsh elements, he sought shelter wherever he could. In his search, he crawled into a car tire, but soon became stuck and unable to free himself. The Houston SPCA’s ambulance team responded to the call and carefully rescued the kitten, who was later named Omni. Back at the shelter, Omni was treated for minor injuries, provided with nourishing food, and given a warm, safe place to recover.
This Petfinder Foundation grant helped fund Omni’s medical treatments, food, water, and shelter during his recovery. Over the next two months, Omni grew stronger and healthier, transforming from a vulnerable kitten into a playful, confident young cat. When he was ready, Omni moved to a foster home, where he thrived in a loving environment. Shortly after, he was adopted by a family who gave him the kindness and love he deserved.
