Westie & Scottie Rescue Houston: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant was specifically to help Melody, a tiny terrier mix with a badly broken leg whom we rescued from an area shelter. Melody was painful and timid when we got her, unable to walk and afraid of what was happening around her. By giving her this surgery, we not only gave her mobility but also gave her confidence to enjoy her life. Melody now enjoys running, playing, and hopping into her momma’s lap. She is a very happy girl whose tail never stops wagging.

How many pets did this grant help?

This grant was specifically for Melody.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Melody came to Westie and Scottie Rescue Houston with a broken leg, which the vets determined was a displaced distal femur fracture. The surgery involved inserting a plate in her back left leg to realign the bones, strengthen her leg, and promote bone growth and healing in the correct position. Following surgery, Melody remained in her foster home with restricted activity and physical therapy exercises until the surgeons cleared her for adoption.

An approved adopter adopting another foster dog met her and instantly fell in love with her. As soon as Melody was released after surgery, the adopter came back for officially adopt and make her part of the family.
