SpokAnimal C.A.R.E.: Play Yard Renovation Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
For years we've made due with a 4-foot fence around most of our play yard, which obviously wasn't ideal. Once we started offering Dogs Playing for Life playgroups, the need to fully enclose the yard with a 6-foot fence became more acute.
We received a $12,000+ estimate to replace the fence, which was well beyond our means. Thanks to the discovery of fence-post extension sleeves, and grant funding from the Petfinder Foundation and Dogs Playing for Life, we were able to retrofit posts and stretch new 6-foot chain link around the entire yard for a fraction of that cost! We were also able to install a secure, permanent catch pen entrance. We're super excited that our volunteers and staff now have a safer and more functional space where our dogs can let loose.
Please note: The number of pets helped by the grant this year is not as high as we anticipated because of a delay in getting the project started. After the renovations began, we had an outbreak of an unconventional respiratory illness in our kennels and our vet implemented a precautionary quarantine, which is only now being lifted.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Ava is a 5-year-old hound mix who is bursting with energy and she can’t wait to explore and sniff out new adventures in the play yard! We’re thrilled that we now have a higher fence so she can enjoy one of her favorite games: playing fetch!
Ava also loves Dogs Playing For Life playgroups because she’s a friendly gal who gets along great with other dogs. For her, there’s only one thing better than play time, and that would be getting a forever home of her own.
