Pleasants County Humane Society: Cat Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant made a meaningful difference for both our shelter and the cats in our care, especially in a rural area like ours where funding and access to supplies are limited. As a small, rural shelter, we do not have the budget to regularly purchase enrichment items, yet our cats often stay with us longer due to fewer adopters and lower foot traffic than urban shelters.
The toys and scratching posts funded by this grant provided much more than entertainment. They gave our cats mental stimulation, physical exercise, and a healthy way to express natural behaviors while living in kennels. This helped reduce stress, boredom, and anxiety, which are common challenges for cats in shelter environments.
For our organization, the enrichment items helped improve overall cat well-being, making the cats more active, relaxed, and social. This leads to better behavior, more positive interactions with visitors, and a stronger chance of adoption. In a rural shelter where every adoption opportunity matters, this kind of support has a lasting impact on both the animals and the people who care for them.
How many pets did this grant help?
40-50 cats
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Frankie came to the shelter about a year and a half ago as a very shy and frightened cat. He was withdrawn and hesitant to interact, which made it harder for him to show his true personality.
After the enrichment toys and scratching posts funded by this grant were introduced, Frankie began to engage more with his environment. He especially enjoyed the toys, which gave him a healthy outlet for play and helped reduce his fear and stress.
Over time, Frankie became more confident, relaxed, and affectionate. The enrichment items helped bring out his playful and loving side, making him more comfortable around people and better prepared for adoption.
At this time, Frankie has not yet been adopted and is still available for adoption, but he is much sweeter and more social than when he first arrived, which improves his chances of finding a forever home.
