Humane Society of Barron County: Play Yard Renovation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Thanks to this grant, we were able to make significant improvements to our outdoor play yard, enhancing both safety and functionality for our adoptable dogs. Several sections of fencing were updated, and outdated, unsafe outdoor kennels — previously integrated into the back fence and posing an escape risk — were removed. Additionally, we installed a secure safety gate around our large rear entrance, addressing a known vulnerability where past escapes had occurred. These upgrades allow our dogs to enjoy more freedom in the yard while ensuring their safety. In the future, we also plan to install new outdoor kennels designed with improved safety standards.

How many pets did this grant help?

Approximately 20

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

This grant has made a difference for dogs like Ashley, our currently adoptable husky. Ashley is energetic, intelligent, and known for her talent for digging and her curiosity about the back gate area, previously one of the more vulnerable points in our fencing.

Before these improvements, Ashley would have had a much easier time finding an escape route. Now, with reinforced fencing and a secure safety gate, she can enjoy the yard safely and off-leash without posing a risk to herself or others. These upgrades allow us to give Ashley the exercise and enrichment she needs while maintaining peace of mind for our staff and volunteers.

Meet Ashley here.
