Hot Springs Village Animal Welfare League: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We had an unprecedented number of kittens this year -- over 100 for the season. We also had a ringworm epidemic at our primary kitten foster and had to open an emergency second foster. We could not adopt kittens until they had gone through the four-week treatment, and this set back our adoption efforts by a month or so.

Being able to offer two bonded kittens for the adoption price of one was instrumental in our great adoption success. Currently, we have only one kitten at the second foster and six very new kittens at the primary foster.

We were also able to provide medical support for a couple of longtime residents at the shelter, such as Mimi, who need medicine and a special diet for her chronic, severe gingivitis. She was recently adopted after a five-month stay.

How many pets did this grant help?

10-15

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Minerva (first photo) was a 5-year-old surrendered cat. Her owners were moving and could not take her to the new home.

Minerva was not a friendly animal at first and took a lot of attention from our animal-care and cat-care workers. She has reoccurring, severe urinary-tract infections and required a prescription UTI diet as well as a prescription for the Calm diet.

Minerva was a guest at our shelter for eight months. Because of the medical support given to Minerva, she became a much more approachable animal. Minerva found her forever home with the financial aid from this grant.
