Miss Maggie May's Rescue: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant was a huge help in finding homes for the puppies in our care. We took in a pregnant mom from one of the dumping grounds here in Tucson, then a week later we were contacted about another mom in the same area who'd had her four pups in a four-foot hole she had dug. This was in July, when we were having 105-plus temperatures. The following week, the first mom gave birth to eight pups.

With inflation and the cost of everything going up, we have had to raise our adoption fees, but we still kept them in line with what other rescues in our area have set. But adoptions have been slow no matter where you are, so finding homes for everyone has been hard. The more we can find homes for, the more we can help.

We were able to use the grant money to offset some of the fees for nine of the 12 pups mentioned above and for two other pups we took in, for a total of 11 who found new homes with the help of this grant.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Knox (first photo) had been adopted out by our local shelter and found herself in a home with older dogs who picked on her. The owner posted her for free on Nextdoor.

One of our fosters saw the post and brought her into our rescue. We could see just how much she had been picked on: She had scabs from bites and nips and an ear hematoma from her ear being pulled.

We gave her time to heal and to trust other older dogs and found her a great home.

Sheldon (second photo) came in from our local shelter and has found his new home.

Peaches, Sunny, Berry, and Finn were the four pups born in the hole their mother dug to keep them safe. They all found new homes.

Rizzo, Newton, Frenchie, Vince, and sweet Lil Bit from the other mom all found new homes as well.
