Animal Rescue of the Rockies: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

By reducing the adult-cat adoption fee from $75 to $35 during kitten season, we get our adult cats a second look by all potential adopters. This enables us to adopt out a lot more adult cats during the competitive kitten season. This approach was very successful and we were able to adopt out 20 adult cats in three months.

Dogwood was dumped at a farm in rural Ault, CO. He’d lived outdoors there for almost a year when, during the winter, he developed a cough and runny eyes. His fur got dull and he became listless. His elderly caretakers brought him onto their back porch to give him a little protection from the elements. They believed he almost died. But slowly he got better and he was released back outside to live with his colony of feral cats on the farm.

That spring, three kittens were born to the colony and the caretakers had had enough. They invited Animal Rescue of the Rockies (ARR) to trap the kittens and help them get the whole colony TNR’d.

During discussions with the caretakers, ARR was told that Dogwood was tame. ARR immediately brought Dogwood into a foster home and found out he still wasn’t quite well. We brought him to health with some antibiotics and put him up for adoption. He was immediately adopted into a home with another cat and a young caretaker. Everyone gets along marvelously and Dogwood is living the high life!
