Halfway Home K9 Rescue: Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Halfway Home K9 Rescue’s current sole focus is on Canadian dogs due to the over-population crisis we are experiencing in our very own country. We primarily assist Northern Ontario dogs from remote, under-serviced communities that do not have access to vet care. Without rescue help and subsequent medical attention, many dogs are at risk of hazards such as illnesses, the elements, or injuries.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

The Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Grant primarily helped us initiate urgent medical attention for two Northern Ontario dogs named Raya and Billy Joe.

Raya arrived suffering from an extremely painful and severe case of mange. Very large and deep portions of her fur were affected by this mite, and without treatment she would have eventually suffered a secondary skin infection, resulting in death.

Billy Joe was flown into Southern Ontario after suffering bilateral front-leg fractures from an unknown accident. Often, these dogs and puppies get hit by cars and have no means of receiving help. He was one of the lucky ones! He was rushed to a vet clinic, where they were able to give him pain medication and antibiotics and put casts on his legs to help them begin to heal. He attended the clinic for frequent cast changes until finally he was medically cleared!

In addition to receiving lifesaving care, both dogs were able to receive regular vaccinations, preventatives, microchipping, spay/neuter, and the TLC they very much deserved!

They have both started new chapters of life full of comfort, safety, and joy in their new adoptive homes. This is all thanks to the assistance received from Purina Canada and the Petfinder Foundation, as well as Southern Ontario vets, Halfway Home K9 Rescue, and, last but not least, their amazing foster families!
