Front Range Freedom Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This award of $1,000 made a HUGE difference to Front Range Freedom Rescue's ability to help sweet Parker the cat with his diaphragmatic hernia repair surgery. Once we obtained the Petfinder Foundation's support, we were allowed to go ahead with his surgery. It was the lynchpin we needed to proceed.

Parker, a handsome orange tabby, came into our care from an overcrowded Texas shelter. He was charming and easygoing, the kind of cat who makes you remember why you started rescuing. His quarantine period passed without incident and he was ready for adoption!

Unfortunately, he binged on a large amount of dry cat food overnight and suddenly had very labored breathing. We rushed him to the E.R., where we discovered that all that food had revealed a very serious issue: He had a diaphragmatic hernia and almost every organ had been pushed up into his chest wall.

The good news was this was totally fixable and, as a young cat, his prognosis was excellent: He would have no lasting damage or long-term negative effects. The bad news was that it was a big surgery and came with a big price tag. We desperately wanted to give Parker a chance at adoption after recovery from surgery and an opportunity to live a happy, normal, full life!

He had a successful surgery and rested at his foster home. With a big surgery like this, he had some weeks ahead of recovery, but was expected to be 100 percent after that!

The good news keeps coming for this sweet orange boy. He has been home in foster care for several weeks now and is doing amazing! Thanks to all the support he received, Parker has the opportunity to live a healthy and happy life. He’s feeling better every day and becoming more active and playful. He wasted no time living his renewed life!

He has already stolen his foster family’s hearts, and they have decided to adopt him as a permanent family member. Lucky Parker will live with a family who loves him and can provide the care he needs for a lifetime.
