Astara had been euthanasia-listed at the shelter after receiving a cancer diagnosis from x-rays. The puppy we met was full of life and did not act sick, so we pulled her, gave her some time to grow and heal, and then sought answers about her condition to make her ready for adoption.
Astara needed a tumor removed and biopsied in her mouth, as well as a scan of her rear leg. UC Davis Veterinary School was able to perform diagnostics and believed it to be an odontoma, a benign dental tumor that may have been the result of an impact to her face.
Astara had a successful removal surgery in the end of June and the biopsy came back all clear. New x-rays revealed that her leg probably also suffered an impact, but it had completely healed. Her leg will always be a tiny bit shorter than the other, but she gets along just fine.
Astara is a gentle giant. Her DNA may reveal a little bit of horse mixed in there. She is currently on a trial adoption to make sure she “fits” in.
