Dog Star Rescue, Inc.: Play Pet Beds Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Dog Star, Inc., is a 100% volunteer, no-kill, foster-based rescue organization that intakes approximately 73 dogs and adopts out 71 dogs per month. Our fosters open their homes to provide rescue dogs with a safe landing when they arrive in Connecticut, allowing them time to decompress from their traumatic experiences and adapt to living in a household setting.

Many of our foster families take in multiple rescue dogs throughout the year. Through generous donations and grants from local businesses and foundations, Dog Star, Inc., provides fosters with access to a pantry where they can obtain food, medicine, toys, crates, bowls, and bedding for their rescue dog(s), thereby eliminating financial expenses. Thanks to the P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant, we can continue to offer this support to our volunteer fosters and provide a soft place for our rescue dogs to rest.

Dog Star Rescue, Inc., partners with various foster-based rescue organizations from across the United States to help them reduce shelter overpopulation and euthanasia cases. One of our alliances is with Hearts and Bones in Dallas, TX, where the abandoned-dog population and euthanasia rates are among the highest in the country.

Monica, the black and white dog featured in the photo, arrived at Dog Star Rescue, Inc., in Bloomfield, CT, along with her brother via a transport carrier after a long journey from Dallas. The 6-month-old siblings were roaming the streets without any collars or identification before Hearts and Bones rescued them. They were shy and fearful of people and other dogs.

Susan, one of Dog Star Rescue, Inc.’s foster coordinators, is seated with Monica and another rescue dog, Wesley, at an April adoption event. Monica enjoyed resting on the soft bed after a long trip from Texas as she patiently awaited a loving family to adopt her. Fortunately, she was adopted on the day she arrived, and was only in our care for one day!

Susan, along with the other foster coordinators, made sure foster families received a P.L.A.Y. bed for their rescue dog(s). Many of our fosters care for multiple rescue dogs until their adoption, and appreciate receiving the donated dog supplies. Susan, who has been a volunteer since April, 2014, has fostered over 60 dogs! The donation of P.L.A.Y. beds will continue to help dozens, if not hundreds, of dogs in our care until they find their forever families.
