Humane Society of North Central Florida: Play Pet Beds Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

While not all dogs in our care tolerate having beds in their kennels, P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds have proven to be a crucial resource for the animals who need them most. Our shelter is frequently called upon by rural shelters and partner organizations to take in dogs with medical needs — many of whom are recovering from surgeries, injuries, or severe neglect.

For these animals, soft, supportive bedding isn't just a comfort — it's a necessity. Many arrive with bare, sensitive skin that can break open even from gentle contact with rough surfaces. The durable and washable design of the P.L.A.Y. beds provides the extra cushioning needed to support their healing while standing up to the demands of a high-volume shelter environment. These beds have made a meaningful difference in the recovery and well-being of some of our most vulnerable canine residents, offering them the comfort they deserve during their rehabilitation.

Thank you for helping us provide a higher standard of care through this generous grant.

In early January, the Humane Society of North Central Florida (HSNCF) was contacted by an animal control officer from Glister County about a severely injured puppy named Robbie. Due to the severity of his injuries, euthanasia was initially being considered. However, in a final act of hope and compassion, the officer reached out to us to see if we could give Robbie the second chance he deserved.

Upon intake, our veterinary team estimated Robbie to be around five months old. He had suffered extensive injuries — multiple puncture wounds consistent with a dog attack, as well as fractures likely caused by a car accident or other trauma. In addition to his injuries, Robbie was underweight, dehydrated, and in overall poor health, requiring immediate and intensive medical intervention.

While our team was able to treat his external wounds, Robbie’s leg required a complex orthopedic surgery to preserve his mobility and quality of life. The procedure involved the placement of multiple metal plates to stabilize the fractures, and his recovery would be long and delicate.

Throughout his stay at the shelter and later in his foster home, Robbie was dependent on a soft, cushioned bed — such as those generously provided through the P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant — for comfort and healing. These beds gave him the supportive surface he needed to rest without putting pressure on his injuries and helped prevent further skin breakdown or discomfort during his recovery.

Robbie’s journey is a powerful example of how compassion and partnership can save lives. Thanks to the thoughtful intervention of the animal control officer, the dedication of our team, the support of the Dr. Doolittle Fund, and the comfort provided by P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds, Robbie got his second chance. Today, he is thriving in his adoptive home — with his former foster family who couldn’t bear to say goodbye.
