Guardians of Florida Animal Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Honey is a gunshot victim and a very sweet soul. She spent two months in the ER and still has a long road ahead. Her ER bill to date totaled $7.7K -- a massive amount for us to absorb, but once we commit to rescue an animal, we follow through with whatever it takes. The Petfinder Foundation's Emergency Medical Grant helped us pay down Honey's medical bill, and we are incredibly grateful!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Honey was found unable to walk due to horrific injuries to her front legs after being subjected to gunfire. She was rushed to our ER vet from the county shelter, where she was sedated to assess her injuries and establish a treatment plan.

She has endured excessive cruelty and excruciating pain at the hands of evil humans, yet she remains sweet and timid. She’s very young, and was found as a still-lactating mama with necrotic wounds and maggot larvae embedded in her front legs due to the hundreds of buckshot pellets that penetrated her skin and broke her bones.

Honey spent two months at our ER vet in Miami and has come a long way since she was found completely unable to use her front legs. One leg underwent surgery and has recovered enough over the past two months that she can put weight on it. The other leg has completely crushed metacarpals that are inoperable.

She will continue to wear a splint requiring weekly changes to hopefully develop a callous that will allow her to put weight on the other leg, per the orthopedic surgeon. The last resort is an amputation, but we are going to do absolutely everything we can to give her a chance to avoid that outcome.

Honey doesn’t really know she is different; she now tries to do zoomies and play. She is a beautiful, sweet soul who was dealt a horrible set of cards, but she is on her way to recovery and we will find her an amazing family when she is fully recovered.
