Little Beans Hope Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant had a tremendous impact on our organization and the pets in our care—especially one special kitten named Canon.
Canon was rescued in June along with her three siblings. She was a sweet, playful, and affectionate kitten—though a little on the shy side. For months, she thrived in our care. But in October, we noticed her belly was becoming unusually distended. Concerned, we took her to the vet, and bloodwork confirmed our worst fear: Canon had developed FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), a once-fatal disease.
Thanks to the support from this grant, we were able to immediately begin life-saving treatment with GS-441524 injections, eventually transitioning her to an oral form of the same medication. FIP treatment is an 84-day course followed by an 84-day observation period, with routine bloodwork throughout to track progress. Canon responded well to the initial treatment, but unfortunately, she relapsed during the observation phase and required multiple hospitalizations.
The grant helped cover the cost of those hospitalizations. Without this funding, providing Canon with this level of care would have been incredibly difficult for our small rescue.
How many pets did this grant help?
One specific cat; however, we have 30 cats in our care.
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Canon responded beautifully to the first 84 days of her FIP treatment. Within days of starting medication, the fluid in her belly began to recede, and she quickly returned to her playful, affectionate self. Her foster family was completely devoted to her care—making sure she never missed a single vet appointment and surrounding her with love every step of the way.
But just two weeks into her observation phase, things took a heartbreaking turn. Canon suddenly spiked a fever, became lethargic, and began vomiting. We rushed her to the vet, and our worst fears were confirmed: The FIP had returned.
Canon bravely began a second round of treatment, but this time, the battle was much harder. She struggled to regain her strength, and it seemed she was being hospitalized every couple of weeks. Despite the best care, constant monitoring, and the unwavering love of her foster family, her tiny body couldn’t keep up the fight.
After 119 days of treatment, Canon’s little heart began to give out, and her organs started to shut down. She passed peacefully at the vet’s office, surrounded by the people who loved her most. Though her story didn’t end the way we had hoped, the grant gave her the best possible chance—and ensured that she was never alone, never in pain, and always cherished.
